I have a clear recollection of what John said the first time he got up in front of a crowd and sang seriously. We were a couple of weeks into shooting on Animal House, and we went to hear some music and have a few drinks at the Hotel Eugene. He kept asking me if I thought he should get up and sing with the band. I asked if he knew some songs and he said he knew “Hey Bartender” and “Sweet Home Chicago” really well. So I said “sure, man, go for it”, or some such phrase. He got up, sang both of them, and was really good. Great energy and interpretation. He loved it. It really fired him up.
